In Solidarity with IUOE, local 772

The APTPUO wishes to express its solidarity with its colleagues, Local 772 of the International Union of Operating Engineers (‘IUOE’), which represents 28 operating engineers responsible for operating and maintaining the University of Ottawa power plant.

The strike began at 12:01 a.m. this morning, this being Friday, August 30, 2024.

We support the IUOE in its demands for better working conditions. Bill 124 has had a negative impact on their working conditions and wages. In addition, the lack of competitive working conditions has created a recruitment and retention crisis. It is vital that the university administration recognises the need to offer respectable and competitive working conditions in today’s market.

We call on the administration to return to the bargaining table to present fair and competitive proposals that will allow the power station to continue to serve the campus without interruption and avoid any disruption to the start of the academic year.
